Despite growing up in the church, I’ve never liked Christian fiction. Admitedly, I’ve not read much of the genre. But what I have read was plainly not good. Amateur writing. Shallow characters. Boring plots. Predictable endings. Kind of like Christian films.

Which is why I was excited to pick up The Unlikely Intrusion of Adams Klein by John Greco. I had a feeling it would be different (read: better) than what I’d read before. And (spoiler) I wasn’t wrong.

I’ve known John for a few years. I wrote for him as a contributor back when he was the editor of He Reads Truth, the devotional company. His wife wrote and edited for me as a freelancer when I worked for another ministry. So I’d gotten to experience firsthand how talented John is with words.

This is not John’s first book, but it’s the first I’ve read. It’s also not obviously a “Christian” fiction. Greco is a Christian author. And it’s released by a Christian publisher (Moody). But reading the book without that context, you might miss it. And that’s a good thing.

Every other work of Christian fiction I’ve read beats you over the head with a simple message. This book (thankfully) doesn’t. It’s not even clear what the message is yet. This is only the first book of a trilogy afterall. And it’s goal is to establish relatable…
