I originally read Building a StoryBrand about eight years ago and it made a huge impact on my marketing career. Creating messaging strategies for companies is part of my job, and that’s heavily influenced by StoryBrand.

So I was curious to read this recently released update to the book. Unfortunately, I don’t believe there’s enough new material to justify a re-read if you’re already familiar with the previous book. It’s also heavy on the self-promotion, especially their new AI messaging tool.

With that said, this is still an eye-opening framework if you’re unfamiliar with StoryBrand. The book is still well-written and it’s a quick enough read. I was just hoping for more new or expanded ideas from Donald Miller.

Confusion is the Enemy

  • Our enemy is noise.
  • The human brain is drawn toward clarity and away from confusion.
  • People’s brains are designed to tune us out if we confuse them.
  • What we call marketing is just clutter and confusion.
  • People make buying decisions not on what we say but what they hear.
  • Nobody remembers a company that just makes noise.
